Tooth infection, decay, and overcrowding can require the extraction of a tooth. Extractions are performed by a dentist or oral surgeon and are typically a quick outpatient procedure. Tooth extraction is the professional removal of a tooth from its socket. Sometimes when a tooth is broken, damaged or decayed, solutions include a filling, a crown or an alternative treatment. In some cases too much damage prevents saving the tooth. In other, very different cases, extractions may also be performed when there are extra teeth overcrowding the mouth which is often the case with wisdom teeth.
